Hours after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex released a never-before-seen photo from their royal wedding, the man who took the image has revealed how he came to capture the iconic moment.
Alexi Lubomirski was selected by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle after he first photographed the couple for their official engagement portraits.
It’s been two years since Prince Harry and Meghan announced their happy news to the world, fronting the cameras for the first time together in the gardens at Kensington Palace.
Lubomirski shared the same photo Harry and Meghan released to mark the anniversary, revealing it was actually an outtake.
“2 years ago today, Kensington Palace called my phone, out of the blue, whilst I was sitting in a hospital waiting room, waiting for a family member to wake up after a 10 hour brain surgery, to ask if I would be interested in doing a project together,” Lubomirski wrote on Instagram.
“Two weeks later, I was shooting the official engagement portraits of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.”
The stunning images were released in December, 2017, and show the pair posing on steps outside Frogmore House in Windsor, with Harry wearing a navy suit and Meghan wearing a gown by Ralph and Russo.
A second photograph is in black and white, with the actress wearing a cream sweater by Victoria Beckham and lovingly touching the Prince’s face, while showing off her engagement ring.
Soon after a third, and much more candid, image was released from the shoot.
In May, Lubomirski was tasked with capturing Prince Harry and Meghan’s royal wedding.
“The next year, I was shooting the official wedding portraits at Windsor castle,” the photographer continued on Instagram.
“This is an outtake from the Rose garden where we were given 3 minutes to take some informal pictures of the happy couple after the wedding reception. Happy memories! X p.s. the family member is doing great!”
One of the most iconic photos from the royal wedding was of Harry and Meghan sitting on the steps of Windsor Castle following the ceremony inside St George’s Chapel.
“The sun is setting right just over the top of Windsor Castle just behind them, it was just the most serene, beautiful light, they’re in love, walking around this beautiful garden,” Lubomirski said.
“I said just before you go in, let’s sit down on these stairs, and she just slumped in between his legs.
“They were just laughing because they were joking about how they were exhausted and finally it was over.”
